What It Was: (Ch. 508, pg. 5 to 8)
[I assume Itachi was in Amegakure. In any case, he's sitting on a pier and watching sharks circle in the water below. Kisame walks up behind him.]
Itachi: ......... [turning back to look at Kisame as he approaches]
Kisame: I've been selected to be your new partner. I'm Hoshigaki Kisame. Formerly of the Hidden Mist Village and its Seven Shinobi Swordsmen... Please to make your acquaintance. And you're Uchiha Itachi, formerly of the Hidden Leaf Village.
Itachi: [looking back at the water] ......
Kisame: I've heard rumors of how you killed every last one of your clansmen. I know all about you...that's why I was chosen to be your partner. It's impossible to put into words...the way it feels to slaughter your brethren...eh, Itachi-san?
Itachi: [still looking away] ......You're rather talkative. You say you know me well...what about yourself? You were lost in the Mist, a wandering rogue unable to find himself...am I right?
Kisame: [swings Samehada off his shoulder, so it stops right past Itachi's head] Allow me to teach you some interesting trivia... Sharks start out as eggs, but incubate and hatch in the womb. Sometimes the number of pups is less than the number of eggs fertilized. Do you know why?
Itachi: ......
Kisame: Cannibalism. The pups start eating each other within the mother's womb the moment they hatch.
Itachi: [looking bored]
Kisame: They start killing their siblings the moment they enter the world, viewing everything they see as nothing more than prey. As of today, you and I are fellow members of Akatsuki. So be careful...of me.
Itachi: Same to you. [Mangekyou activate]
Kisame: Kheheh... [swings Samehada back up onto his shoulder] Of course, I'd rather we got along and had a good time. Hopefully we won't end up as each other's final opponent.
Itachi: [standing up] Those who turn their hands against their comrades are sure to die a terrible death. Be prepared.
Kisame: Kheheh...then the both of us are already both branded as terrible men, are we not?
Itachi: No...we are humans, not fish. [walking past Kisame] We don't know what kind of people we truly are until the moment before our deaths. As death comes to embrace you, you will realize what you are. That's what death is, don't you think?
What He Learned:
- More confirmation of how far his reputation spread...
- Awareness of Kisame's reputation and potential dangerousness.
- Also he was kind of a manipulative ass back then but he knew that already--it goes hand in hand with an awareness of how he physically affected his Akatsuki persona (sitting with one leg bent, one hand dangling out of his cloak, etc.).
- The reproductive cycle of sharks!
- What it feels like to activate the Mangekyou Sharingan from the regular Sharingan. Not that he can do that yet.
- Some of his previous philosophical musings about death and what it means. He will probably be ambivalent on whether he still holds that view, not least because death is impermanent in Sabra (though it's still an Event), and that impermanence makes it hard for him to connect with how he used to think about death--because what he used to think about death is highly dependent on death being a permanent, final end.
