spilledbloodlinesPositive Significant: Final battle with Sasuke; from Kirin to the end.
What It Was: (Ch. 391, pg. 10 to Ch. 393; end of Ch. 402)
I decided to split up the final fight for a few reasons, one of which is that the two halves have very different emotional content and the other being that I wanted to allow for Itachi possibly remember a fake death before he remembered his real one. This second half contains his actual death, though.
The memory starts with a flash of blue-white light trailing off, and Itachi being in immense pain (from Susanoo being summoned), falling a couple stories and landing in the ruins of the building where he fought Sasuke, while rain falls all around him.
Sasuke: [watching Itachi's prone body] ...ver... It's over... It's finally over...!!
Itachi: So this is...my "manner of death" that you wanted to make a reality...?
Sasuke: !!!
Itachi: [slowly getting to his feet]
Sasuke: [releasing the curse seal] Why, you...!!
Itachi: [now on his knees, surrounded by the translucent red skeleton of the regenerating Susanoo] If I didn't have this, I would have been done for...
Sasuke: !?
Itachi: [eyes whited out except for pupils] You truly have...become strong...Sasuke...
Sasuke: !
Itachi: [on his feet] Now it's my turn...to show you the final trick I have up my sleeve... "Susanoo".
Sasuke: ...Susanoo...?
Itachi: The third and final technique, along with Tsukuyomi and Amaterasu, that awoke within these eyes on that fateful day...
Sasuke: [still breathing hard while shifting into a fighting position]
Itachi: Sasuke...are you finally out of techniques? If you have any more moves up your sleeve...I suggest you stop trying to save them. The true fight begins now.
[The sky starts to clear and the rain trails off. Meanwhile, Susanoo quickly begins fleshing out, muscle covering its bones, then skin, and then armor.]
Sasuke: !
[The markings on Sasuke's face begin to shift and change; one of his eyes goes black with a yellow iris and slit pupil. He flinches and doubles over, clinging to himself, while Itachi observes from within Susanoo.]
Sasuke: Shit...no... [falling to his knees] Ugh...
[The flesh of Sasuke's left shoulder begins to shift and grow as eight enormous snakes burst out of his body, heads waving high over the surrounding trees.]
Itachi: I know this feeling... Orochimaru's Yamata no Jutsu.
[He begins walking towards Sasuke and the snakes. One of the snakes strikes while he draws Susanoo's sword, Totsuka, and he cuts off the snake's head. The rest of the snakes strike and are all decapitated in short order until only one is left. The snake's mouth stretches wide open as Orochimaru's torso begins to form within it.]
Itachi: ...You finally show yourself...
Orochimaru: AHAHAHAAAA!! Buuh... Bwuah... [vomiting up Kusanagi and drawing it from his own throat] Here and now! The chance I've been waiting for has finally come! And it's all thanks to you forcing Sasuke-kun to expend the chakra he used to keep me suppressed! I'll take his body for my own and defeat--
Itachi: [stabbing Orochimaru with Totsuka]
Orochimaru: --you?
Itachi: Alright, Sasuke. Anything else?
Orochimaru: Huhu... You don't really think a little cut like this will be enough to stop me-- [shuddering] Th-this... It can't be... The Sword of Totsuka!? Itachi...you had it all along...? Ugh!
[Orochimaru begins to melt and deform around the blade still stuck into his chest, the substance of his body getting sucked into the blade. With it goes the final snake growing out of Sasuke's body, as the last of Orochimaru's influence and chakra is sucked out of his body.]
Itachi: End of the line, Sasuke.
[The giant snake and Orochimaru are sucked into the gourd held by the third hand on Susanoo's right arm while a few normal-sized white snakes fall to the ground around Sasuke and start slithering away.]
Sasuke: Uh... Ugh...
Itachi: [panting, then coughing harshly]
Sasuke: [watching]
Itachi: Your eyes belong to me now. I'll take them slowly... I want to savor this. [stops, clutching his chest and coughing up blood]
Sasuke: !?
Itachi: [falling to his knees, still coughing. Susanoo seemingly begins to fade, armor and flesh dissipating.]
Sasuke: !
[Sasuke grabs a kunai out of his pouch and flings it at Itachi. It explodes upon impact, but when the smoke clears he sees that Susanoo has morphed into a new form, and that Itachi has been protected by its shield. Itachi begins to approach Sasuke while Sasuke backs away. He pulls out a scroll and summons a series of exploding tags that he flings at Itachi; all of them explode against Susanoo's shield without effect. Itachi is still moving, and Sasuke is beginning to look seriously scared.]
Itachi: [reaching out with two finger] My eyes... My...
[Sasuke draws his sword and leaps into the air, trying to stab Itachi. He gets shield-bashed by Susanoo, sending his sword spinning away and his back into a chunk of still-standing wall. Itachi is now only a few feet away from him, but he scrambles to his feet only to realize that he's trapped. Itachi reaches out pluck out his eyes...but...pokes him on the forehead instead. Sasuke is understandably kind of stunned.]
Sasuke: !?
Itachi: [smiling] I'm sorry, Sasuke... There won't be a next time.
[Itachi's fingers trail off Sasuke's face as Susanoo dissipates for good. He collapses to the ground and dies.]
What He Learned:
- Sasuke :( :( :(
- What Susanoo is, which is to say basically invincible but incredibly taxing and painful to use. He was more or less blinded the moment it finished forming the first time.
- So that was Orochimaru. What a creep.
- It was EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that he manage to poke Sasuke on the face. That was the moment he sealed that Amaterasu into Sasuke's eye as well as commanded any existing Amaterasu flames to burn the snakes before they could escape.
- ...And, upon those two final things, he felt satisfied that he'd done everything he possibly could to Keep Sasuke Safe. This was a memory that was largely dominated by a sense of "don't die yet don't die yet fuck can't die yet I can't" but the end of it is...simply a feeling of satisfaction and resignation and release. He'd done everything he could, and this was it. This was the end of the line. Lay down your burden and sleep.
I might add some other stuff if I can think of it. Also, upon taking this memory he will cough up blood and possibly be blinded for a day and slowly regain most of his sight over the next couple, because I like having memory regains triggering physical reactions. :T
Note: As of Day 289, this is the only memory Itachi hasn't taken. The murder accusation one was offscreened thanks to the Lyvusplosion the day before. '-'
